MEETING SPACE:

Good news! We will be returning to in-person meetings starting on Monday, September11th. Meetings will be held at the Manchester NH Police Department Community Room, 405 Valley Street, Manchester, NH, 7:00pm to 9:00pm. All the meetings will be on the first Monday of the month with the exception of September. “Artist of the Month” awards will resume so please bring your artwork for judging.

NEXT MEETING: MONDAY, December 4th at the Valley Street Police Station Community Room
 MEETING: PROGRAM SPEAKER:
December Presenter: Wendy Wetherbee
https://https://www.puredichotomy.com/
Wendy will present a variety of images of new jewelry works in precious metal, inspired by nature &
her own nature photography. She will discuss her process, show some in process photos and a gallery
of finished pieces. She will bring some samples of finished works and will speak to the inspiration of
some select pieces.
Wendy is an Artist and Designer who was born and raised in New Hampshire and who is inspired by
nature and wildlife. The creatures and places in Northern New England feature prominently in her
work because it is “my own personal habitat, and a large part of who I am. The texture and pattern in my
work is inspired by fur, feathers, ripples and other elements of the natural world. I have been studying
nature since early childhood. The world outside my windows is the world that runs through my blood.
Skipping across bubbling streams, smelling the air after a rain, catching toads in the garden and
watching butterflies in the meadow are memories that have shaped who I am. My hope is that my
connection to the earth comes through in my art and inspires others to feel their own connection to the
natural world around them.”
In addition to metal smithing, she is a nature photographer, and also work in acrylic, watercolor
graphite pencil, and mixed media. She also has a 28+ year career as a visual designer, running
Wetherbee Creative, a boutique creative services and web development studio, where she helps other
business owners, artists, nonprofits and corporations with their marketing and promotion using design as a
tool for communication.
Wendy will bring some items to be available for
purchase for Holiday gift giving.
Artist of the Month (AOTM):

All members are invited to bring a painting to the meeting each month for consideration for an Artist of the Month easel. Members present vote for their top 5 paintings of the evening. We currently have 6 location, so there will be 6 winners each month. The winners will be assigned a location and should bring the winning painting to that location within a day or two to display for the entire month. If the painting sells it may be replaced with another of the artist’s own choice.

Artist of the Year (AOTY): This is NOT just about how many times you win AOTM, but is about which member has been most valuable to the organization. Keeping the organization alive & vibrant requires a lot of behind the scenes work. Start thinking now of ways that you can help MAA flourish & grow! Suggestions: sign up for a Committee, volunteer to help at the monthly meeting (be a greeter at the door, help folks sign-in, sell raffle tickets, help with book sales, bring friends to the meetings, stay to help arrange & hang shows, help finding additional AOTM locations … there are, literally, dozens of ways that you can volunteer! Be creative! Make suggestions! Come to Board meetings with your ideas! Make yourself & your efforts visible! And, yes participate in Artist of the Month & other exhibits.

REMEMBER TO BRING a framed/wired artwork to the meeting to submit for Artist of the Month. Everyone present gets to vote for their 5 favorite artworks. The intent is for voting to be ANONYMOUS – your vote for the artwork, not for the artist!
Thank you to John & Joe for stepping up to volunteer to staff the raffle and book sales. Artists Helping Artists – our motto! And speaking of our Lending
Library, it’s gotten too large to manage so, every month one bin of artbooks will be available for purchase at just $2.00 each.
AOM Exhibit locations for this year (so far, always seeking more!) include the Bedford Public Library, Betley Commons, Creative Framing, Day’s Jeweler’s,
Manchester Health Office, St. Mary’s Bank. and Triangle Credit Union.

Artist of the Year News

Laurie Lafleur is our Artists of Year for 2023 – 2024

Laurie has been a memeber of the MAA for many years and has participated in all areas of the organization including being Vice President, acting President, Arts in the Park director, many times Aritists of the Month winner and hanging her artwork in MAA shows.  She also teaches painting to a wonderful group of people every week.

In her own words, “I have worked in all media, but acrylic is the choice of the moment. Any interesting subject finds its way to my easel. Very grateful that the “baby pictures” series have earned me a mention in Who’s Who in American Art.”- laurie

WEBSITE NEWS

Did you know… that the website contains video art lessons?
When Googling Manchester Artists, make sure that you get Manchester Artists and not
Manchester Art. There has been some confusion when hitting the wrong spelling. Usually
you end up with the Manchester, England or the Manchester, CT websites.
LENDING LIBRARY
MAA Lending Library currently has a large selection of instruction/”Inspirational” books
and DVDs available to MAA members who would like to borrow them. We have a featured book of the month:
“The Mixed Media Source book” by Sean Dye. Whether you want to do mixed media as a
way of investigating new materials, reinvigorate a familiar medium or technique, or totally
reinvent your existing artistic style or vision, “The Mixed Media Source book” provides
comprehensive, practical guidelines. The book begins with a brief historical overview of
how and why different mediums and supports have been mixed. Subsequent chapters
explain the origin, composition, and physical characteristics of today’s most popular
mediums and art techniques–drawing mediums, pastel, oil color, watercolor, acrylic, casein
and egg tempura, and encaustic and printmaking.

MAA MEMBER BENEFIT

The MAA website has a new look and easy functionality. This is to get us more exposure and bring us into the 21st Century. One of the key features will enable members to show and sell their work from the website. This is an MAA benefit to members. To participate, each member should take digital pictures of their artwork. The digital images should be in JPG or TIFF format and forwarded to showcase@manchesterartists.com

For each image you must have:
1. title of the piece
2. specify the medium and support used (i.e.: acrylic on canvas, etc.)
3. size of the artwork; if framed or unframed
4. prices: of original, prices for copies (shipping included)
5. prepare an artist statement;(talk about your artwork)
6. give us your email or your website so customers can contact you
7. MAA will take a 10% commission on web sales (passed by Board in January ’18)

IMPORTANT: Submission of an image grants non-exclusive permission to the Manchester Artists Association to utilize the image on the MAA website and in other promotional materials for purposes of promoting the MAA, and MAA sponsored events and events in which the MAA participates.

OPEN POSITIONS

Since we still have the newsletter, publicity and programs chairs open, won’t you consider volunteering for these tasks?   You may want to try one of these positions before committing to it.  That’s fine!  How about sharing a task with a friend?  Two of you responsible for one area. You will find that it doesn’t entail as much as you think since the task is all spelled out for you and which you can adapt to your ways.

Our secretary, Gin Demers, has compiled all the information for all the MAA positions. Contact Jim O’Donnell or any of the Board members, if you’d like to review an area of responsibility before trying/committing yourself to it.

As Artists Helping Artists, we make our organization better by sharing our time and effort.  With many volunteers keeping the organization running smoothly, the tasks are spread thinner so that no one individual is overwhelmed.
